Cover illustration: Species of Lithops are so morphologically reduced that it's only by the colour and markings of the leaf-tips that taxa can be distinguished, and even within a species no two plants have exactly the same characters. Among the most variable of the species is L. hookeri, of which seven varieties are recognized by Desmond Cole in his wonderful but out-of-print book on the genus. Growing such varieties side by side for comparison is one of the pleasures of having a lithops collection. The highly diverse seedlings of L. hookeri pictured in our photo (taken by John Trager at Mesa Garden) are undetermined as to variety, but they are from seed collected near Niekershoop, Cape Province, S. Africa.
