COVER: Many South African succulents lead an almost subterranean existence, with only their leaf-tips emergent,
thus lessening dessication in hot, arid habitats. However, the resultant disadvantage is that less light is available. There are species of
Aizoaceae (Lithops, Conophytum, Fenestraria, Frithia) and of Asphodelaceae (Bulbine) that avoid this problem by means of transparent
leaf-tips,which allow sunlight to penetrate below ground to the chlorophyll-bearing portion of the leaves.
Our cover photo shows a species from yet another family with "window plants", the Aloaceae. Haworthia cooperi, with
remarkably glass-like leaf-apices, inhabits the dry grassveld of the Eastern Cape of Soth Africa. The photo by John Trager is of a
plant, cultivated by Kobus Venter (#91/85/2), originally from west of Ft. Brown, South Africa. | |
