If you like growing unusual plants this book is a must. The President of the British Cactus and Succulent Society, Gordon Rowley has produced a book which is unique in the succulent literature. The subtitle to the book gives a better clue as to its contents: Pachycauls, bottle-, barrel- and elephant trees and their kin: a collector's miscellany. These plants coming mostly from the arid regions of the world develop swollen storage organs to store food and water to survive where other plants would perish in the dry season. This is not a botanical group as many plants from different familes have adopted this survival technique. This book published by Strawberry Press is a prime example of their very high standard of publishing and printing expertise and is likely to become a classic work, much sought after, when it goes out of print.
