Mammillaria Reference Collection Project

A Project to create  a National Collection of Mammillaria plants has been started by our Seed Distributor, Mark Masterson on the Isle of Bute. This page contains the current position, and has a link to a more detailed pdf file containing specific activities, proposed research topics as well as more detailed updates on the status of the project.

Synopsis of the Project:

At this present time (4th April 2008), we are into the 3rd year of the project. At the end of year 1 (2006) we had obtained 198 species/subspecies/field collections of Mammillaria. By the end of this year (2007) we expect to have about 400 species etc. At this stage more seed has arrived and sowing will start shortly, and plant buying has now extended to the Reppenhagen Nursery in Austria. At the end of year 5, when we could possibly fulfil the length of establishment of collection requirement, we could have as many as 1000 species. It is planned to keep a photographic record of plants from seedling stage to maturity..

There is already a National Mammillaria Collection at Abbey Brook cactus nursery. Our Collection will differ in that it is planned to build it as far as is possible from seed from  known field collections and from nursery grown plants with a known provenance.
