Dear Gasteria Collectors,

This is a collection of my Gasterias, 40 years of collecting them, and 20 years or more of my hybridizing them. 1 have added on many new hybrids of mine, and still have many more to list, in the future. Soon as I can propagate them.

Not all the new Gasteria's are available yet, but I have priced many of the NIA plants from the previous web site. You can write to me and Ask about availability on the NIA marked plants, as I do get some available from time to time.

I do carry some specie forms, but I prefer the hybrids to most of them, and especially the variegates !!!

Also included in this listing are Grastrolea's, Gasteria's X Aloe's and a few Gasterworthias, Gasteria's X Haworthia's.

All plants are in limited supply, especially the new ones, so I would advise to write or call first before placing an order. Also I have large collection of Agaves and Haworthias, mainly variegates, so you can write me if you are interested in these families of plants. Many of these I sell on Ebay now,as well as the Gasterias from this listing, my Ebay seller name is rick3321. I always have plants up for auctions, as I have given up on mail order listings, due to cost and my health conditions.

I have a severe bone disease called RSD, Reflexive Sympathetic Distrophy, which is the most painful disease known to man. I have had it for 16 years now, and its getting worse, I am now Stage 3,Full Body. So everything I do is very difficult but, I do the best I can, I am in a walker now full time, so visits to the nursery have been cancled, sorry !!!

I got this disease from arthroscopic knee surgery, and it has now been found out that you can get it from any injury you have done to your body in your whole life!!! Even sprains and having your teeth pulled, and can also spread to other parts of the body as well !! It has no age limits, in can attack any one at any time !!! And will also spread to the internal organs. There are over 6 million documented cases in the US alone !! That is a big part of the population !!! There is no cure available in the US, but there is overseas in quite few other countries.

I recommend that all of you look up this disease on the internet, for your knowledge as well as your loved ones. Just do search, and type in RSD, I am a member of the American RSD Group, Keith has RSD also, Stage 3 full body, since he was 14 years old!!! He has the best web site for info on this disease, started Over 10 years ago, and has been visited by over 10 million people world wide !!!!!

Mail Orders

All plants are in limited supply, so Please List Substitutes, or write, email in advance of order. Most of the plants listed are brand new introductions of hybrid Gasterias, from Nature's Curiosity Shop. The others have been plants I have collected over the years, and are from various hybridizers, which I list the best as possible.

I grow mainly in flats now, so I can't list plant by pot size, but I list in the diameter of the plants being sold in inches, where possible. Most plants are between 1 " diameter to about 5" in diameter, more or less, depending on the plant. The smaller being the most miniature forms, the vary rare, and the slowest growing plants.

I price them according to their beauty, and speed of growth, either variegated or non variegated, and the striated or monstrose forms. Some of the hybrids are miniatures, particularily the armstrongii types, so these types are naturally small and slow growing.

Some pictures are of mature plants of many years of age, while others are just young plants yet, but all are well over 8 years of age!! As you know Gasterias change with age, some having even more character and others not so much, but most of them are very pretty in their juvenile state. Plants and pictures are not in alphabetical order, Sorry !!! As I had to take them when I could, and the Gastrolea's are mixed in, as I messed up!!!

Gasteria Culture

Gasteria's are of very easy culture, in fact probably one of the easiest of the succulent groups, as they require so little attention !!! As long as they are potted in the proper size pot, and a good well draining planting mix. They can stay in the same sized container for years, still growing and getting bigger in them as well!!!

The Japanese put Gasterias in Bonsai pots and it makes them look like a million bucks with there beauty!! What a change to a nice container can do for a plant !!! And are very well suited for long, narrow, Bonsai pots. Gasterias are becoming very popular now, which I am happy to see as I have a lot of them, they have been my passion for many years !!! I guess because they are so unusual, with their semi rosette appearance, and that they are always changing, every year you have a different looking plant!!! Especially with all my hybrids, most are changing to the better, with more character, plus many of them are producing variegated pups !!! As I have crossed them all up for many years, so they all have the variegated gene in them.

They prefer an acidic type soil mix, 1/3 peat moss, 113 coarse perlite-sponge rock, and 1/3 good coarse washed concrete sand. If your room is limited, and you have to use small containers, then change mix to 50% peat moss, 50% perlite. Moisten both of these mixes prior to planting. Haworthias also love this mix. Try to fertilize once a month during spring through fall, I use Peter's 20-20-20 Water Soluble as it has many trace minerals other fertilizers don't have.

Gasterias like to be just moist, well drained mix, and not at all soggy wet, as they have very thick leaves which store a lot of water!!! With the peat moss mix, very little water is needed, but don't let them dry out all the way as hard for mix to get wet again. I use just coarse washed sand, 30% pea gravel here, with some coarse mulch, as all I can get here, for growing lot of plants, and they grow fine. Actually do the best here, then they ever have, could be the well water ??? Any way make sure you feed them regularly as these mixes have very little to no food value !!! They prefer good bright light, for best color and character about 30% shade is what I grow mine under. No direct sun, even though in some of the cooler, low light areas of the country, you can grow them in the sun. Propagation is very slow in most of the Gasteria's, as many produce only a few pups in many years !!! Unless you want to let them grow over the years into beautiful clumps. I myself, like most of them when they grown single, as they will develop their best character !!!

They can be propagated from leaves, it takes a long time to make babies, but they will make quite a few. The leaves have to be old enough, and not very tender, more of a leather hard feel to the leaves. Simply remove a leaf from the base of the plant, cut back the thin areas, or cut a whole new straight cut. Dip in a rooting compound or you can just let them dry out, as that is the next step, dry in shady area for 2-3 weeks. After drying out and leaves have healed over good, then you can plant them by pushing them down into the soil mix, about 3/ " -1 " deep, depending on the size of the leaf too !!! Leaves will start to root after many months, and after they do root out, will start making lots of babies. Many times the leaves will dry up and do not root, this is common with the smaller growing forms, as the leaves are so small !!!

Then it will take between 1 - 3 years before the babies are big enough to remove from the leaves, and be potted up on their own !!!

Also you can propagate Gasteria's from seed, which is a long process, but not very difficult. Wait until seed pods are ripe, they will start to split open, then take off and put in small bowl to finish drying. Good seeds are shiny black color. Just simply sprinkle seed on to your seed medium, I use 6" pots, as I can keep seed strains separate that way. Cover seed with about 1/8" of mix and sprinkle, keep barely moist, never let them dry out completely, unless they start to rot. If that happens, let the pots dry out for good week, if possible, won't hurt them at all-seedlings,as long as in shady spot.

Use of some fungicide for Damp Off can be used, if you can find it, also flowers of sulphur works very well!!!

And I can guarantee if you plant seed from my hybrids, you will get a myriad of many nice Gasteria's, as they have over 17 years of genes in them !!! Also you will get some nice variegates as well, if you can keep them growing, that's the trick to those, as they are very weak !!! But all the wait is worth it, when you get just that special one that's stands out from all the rest !!!

Seed from the Japanese gracilis variegates will only produce plants with their genes, and most of them will come up all green, with very little variegates, if any at all !!!

Thank You, Rick Nowakowski
